Homework & Tuition

Homework

At Hadlow, we encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. It’s this philosophy that guides our approach to homework.

The standard homework for a child in Year 1 or 2 is some reading aloud and basic fact activities – the idea is to build a solid learning foundation through rote learning.

As a child becomes more self-managing and self-motivated, we encourage them to work out the homework they need to do. We ask students to make decisions based on what they have yet to complete from the day’s lessons and what they need to do to prepare for the day ahead.

As a Google docs school, all school work is completed and stored online, providing access from home or school.

“I’ve taught speech communication and drama at Hadlow for 14 years. To me, effective communication, expressing yourself confidently and clearly and listening to other ideas and opinions are all essential skills for life. Oral language still remains the predominant mode of communication in our society.”

Cost: $180.00 per term (for weekly lessons, with students working in pairs. A reduced rate is available for families).

Graeme McArthur, music teacher (guitar)

“I’m a practising musician available to teach guitar on site at Hadlow or privately from home. I play the cornet, trumpet and guitar, having performed cornet in brass bands for more than 50 years, as well as dance bands, pit orchestras and New Orleans Style Jazz bands. Still, it’s great to teach youngsters. They take me back to when I first learned to love music. Their enthusiasm is infectious.”

Cost: $25.00 per 1-hour lesson.

Graham Stephenson, music teacher (guitar)

“I’m a qualified classroom teacher who specialised in music teaching and now teaches guitar. I’ve played guitar most of my life, starting with the ukulele as a youngster. Teaching guitar is a real buzz for me. It’s fun and, for many children, learning guitar at school is the only time in their lives they’ll ever make music. To me, that’s important. It’s why Hadlow impresses me – they encourage students to learn music. They see the benefits for all children.”

Cost: $25.00 per half-hour lesson (includes a record of learning).

David Heath, music teacher (drums)

Email David Heath

“I learned drums at the Royal Marine School of Music in England and have played in various bands in London and New Zealand. I’ve been teaching drums at all three Trinity schools for 10 years now. Kids love it. And I love seeing them progress.”

Cost: $25.00 per half-hour lesson.
