Classrooms and Learning
Optimum Learning Environment
Walk into any teaching and learning area at Hadlow and you will notice things have changed since you were at school. For the better, too, we think.
The walls have literally come down to create learning environments that are stimulating, challenging and dynamic. These are exciting times in education worldwide and we are excited to be at the forefront of best practice here in New Zealand.
Teamwork and Learning Conversations
You will see Hadlow teachers working together as a team, with two or more teachers working in the same space at the same time.
You will see students interacting with teachers one-on-one, working independently, collaboratively in pairs and in small groups – frequently engaged in learning conversations.
Teachers on the Move
There’s less furniture and more space. Teachers no longer dictate what has to be learned from the front of the classroom. Instead, they guide, motivate and encourage – and they’re always on the move.
We have personalised learning, which means we give students broad activities and tasks they can adapt to suit their interests.
Flexible Lessons, More Choice
There is still plenty of instruction on the all-important basics of reading, writing and maths. Getting a good foundation in literacy and numeracy is still crucial. But our lessons are flexible. Students have more choice when it comes to the topics of their lessons, the order of the tasks they need to complete and how they want to present information.
There is very little, if any, behaviour management needed. Students stay on task easily in these environments and they are more than ready for secondary school when the time comes.
Learning at Your Own Pace, Any Time
In today’s modern classrooms, we encourage students to become self-directed, self-managing learners who are able to learn at their own pace, anywhere, at any time.
This approach has a remarkable way of engaging and motivating students of all abilities. It is inclusive of all students and sets children up for lifelong learning in the modern world.
We call it Future-Focused Teaching and Learning. Our children call it a great reason to come to school each day.
Sports, Music and Art
Hadlow students get access to a wide range of top-notch facilities.
We have all-weather astroturf courts for tennis and hockey on site, two large playing fields and an athletics arena set up for cricket and softball. Badminton, basketball and PE all take place in our large indoor gym. And we head to the Genesis Recreation Centre for swimming and to Rathkeale College for cross country.
For music, we have a specialist music studio, where lessons take place, individual tuition is provided and our bands, orchestra and choir practise. For the arts, we have dedicated spaces for our arts programme and speech and drama tuition.
