PE, Sport and EOTC

We offer our students a vibrant cultural life at Hadlow – whether they’re interested in sports, music, languages, the arts or something else – there’s something for everyone.

Sports

Hadlow’s very own sports coordinator has developed an eclectic programme offering an exciting range of sporting opportunities.

We offer soccer, netball, cricket, rugby sevens, hockey and tennis (we are particularly strong in hockey and tennis). Every year we host a whole-school athletics day, school cross country and junior and senior swimming sports. There’s private tennis coaching in the summer. In winter, students can join the ski team and visit the slopes.

Our students regularly represent the school in local, regional and national competitions. On site, we have four turf tennis courts, playing fields, a gymnasium and a cricket pavilion.

Physical Education and Sport

During school hours there are weekly Physical Education (PE) sessions and a wide range of sports are introduced and skills are taught. Over the last two years PE lessons have incorporated cricket, badminton, soccer, ‘tchoukball’, hockey, squash and gymnastics.

Swimming

Every year in term one, the whole school has swimming lessons and in term four, Hub One, (year one and two), have swimming lessons in readiness for the summer holidays.

School-wide events

Our school-wide events are swimming, athletics and cross country. Following our school events, pupils are selected to represent Hadlow at the Masterton Primary Schools event and (for those who qualify) the Wairarapa Swimming Championships and the Wellington Regional Athletic and Cross Country championships.

Sports Teams

Hadlow has school teams entered in the local competitions for junior cricket, softball, T-ball, tennis, hockey, (6-a-side and 11-a-side), touch rugby, rippa-rugby, mini-ball and netball. Other codes such as soccer and 15-a-side rugby are played for clubs in the local Saturday competition and this is also the case with Primary Hardball cricket.

Fixtures

In addition to the interclub teams, Hadlow has annual sport fixtures with independent preparatory schools in the Lower North Island; Scots College, Huntley School, Hereworth School, St. Mark’s Church School, St. George’s School and Wellesley College. Pupils are selected to represent Hadlow in cricket, tennis and softball in Terms One and Four and hockey, soccer, rugby and netball in terms two and three.

Private Coaching

In terms one and four we have tennis coaching on offer. Lessons can be in groups, semi-private or private. All the Hadlow interclub tennis teams have coaching as does the inter-school fixture team (our top eight tennis players).

At Hadlow we have a tennis ladder in term one and four and a table tennis ladder in term 2 and 3. All pupils are welcome to join the ladders.

Talk to Mr Hemi, our sports administrator, to discuss sports options for your child or for more information.

EOTC

We all know learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. There’s a whole wide world out there to explore.

Hadlow students learn about their local environment through rock climbing, sailing and taking part in a wide range of community events throughout Masterton and the Wairarapa. They travel to Wellington to visit museums, art galleries and get a first-hand experience of the capital city’s public institutions.
